Media Literacy

Third Graders attend a weekly, 80-minute session in the media center called “media literacy class.” During this class, students develop a deepened understanding of the multiple print and electronic tools that are available for use in researching and evaluating information central to their studies. In developing facility with technological tools and media, Third Grade students are introduced to relevant computer terminology, advanced computer usage and skills, use of the interactive white board, and word processing instruction. Students develop desktop publishing skills in by creating an illustrated report about Native Americans using Microsoft Word and use measurements of themselves to create spreadsheets and graphs using Microsoft Excel. Using Microsoft PowerPoint, students will use tribal reports to create a slide show presentation. Skills include concepts of layout and design, incorporation of graphics, text editing skills, word art, borders and shadows. During this time period, students also access print materials, analyze and evaluate the print and electronic resources at hand to determine which to employ in their research.
