Technology
Second Grade students attend a weekly, 45-minute Technology class where they are introduced to basic computer usage, the use of interactive white boards, computer terminology and computer skills. Word processing skills are addressed during this weekly class. Students develop desktop publishing skills in a variety of ways connected to their classroom research focus on the classroom community. They create a diagram of an imaginary classroom, type interviews conducted with peers and school community workers, and describe their classroom in a newsletter. During a highlight study of the post office as a work community, Second Graders use technology to create post office stamps that are then “sold” through the school-wide post office that they run. Underlying skills at this level address concepts of layout and design by using word art, text and picture frames in publishing.
